How to Build a Modeling Portfolio

Building a modeling portfolio book is an essential step for any aspiring model. During our consulting sessions with clients, we assist with photoshoot preparation, image selection and the layout for the portfolio book and comp cards. Here are some easy steps you can take to get started.

1. Determine your niche. Is your look better suited for fashion, commercial, fitness, or lifestyle modeling? This will help you choose the right type of photos and styling to include in your book. If you're not sure where you fit in the industry, we can help!

2. Hire a professional. Look for a photographer who has experience shooting model portfolios books. Only professional, retouched images are appropriate for your printed book; this is not the place to feature selfies, snapshots or digitals.

3. Focus on your best work. We always say, “You’re only as strong as the weakest photo in your book.” Select a variety of photos that highlight your versatility and range as a model. Include both headshots and full-body shots, as well as different poses, expressions, and styling choices.

4. Consider your printed materials an investment. No business can thrive without proper marketing efforts. A portfolio book is one marketing tool that instantly makes you stand out and helps legitimize you as a professional model when attending agency interviews, open-calls or castings. Plus, it can be considered a tax write-off.

5. Keep it updated. Remember, portfolios are built over time and your book should constantly be evolving as you grow as a model. Be sure to refresh your book with each professional shoot that you have.
